Former Saudi diplomat to Washington says “Micky Mouse should be killed in all cases”

Mickey Mouse must die, says Saudi Arabian cleric/diplomat Sheikh Muhammad Munajid:

The cleric, a former diplomat at the Saudi embassy in Washington DC, said that under Sharia, both household mice and their cartoon counterparts must be killed.

Mr Munajid was asked to give Islam’s teaching on mice during a religious affairs programme broadcast on al-Majd TV, an Arab television network.

According to a translation prepared by the Middle East Media Research Institute, an American press monitoring service, he said: “The mouse is one of Satan’s soldiers and is steered by him…

“Mickey Mouse has become an awesome character, even though according to Islamic law, Mickey Mouse should be killed in all cases.”

Last month Mr Munajid condemned the Beijing Olympics as the “bikini Olympics”, claiming that nothing made Satan happier than seeing females athletes dressed in skimpy outfits.

A former diplomat. There are the guys who our State Department depends on to:

1. be a moderating force in the Middle East

2. keep our economy running smoothly

3. help us in the war against terrorism

..and we wonder why everything is so screwed up?

UPDATE: In the comments section, DPU asks:

“And there’s no chance [he] was making a joke.”

Yeah, I’d say it’s a typical example of Saudi po-mo irony. Those guys just kill at the Laff Lounge.

I mean literally. The head of Saudi Arabian Supreme Judiciary Council Sheikh Salih A-Lahidan declared that evil TV [satellite channel owners] can be killed, saying “It is legitimate to kill those who encourage corruption in faith…if their evil cannot be stopped by other penalties,”

Hey, that’s the same Saudi government official who, in 2005, told young Saudis to go to Iraq and become suicide bombers. You know, King Abdullah’s best friend. What a kidder.

  1. And there’s no chance the he was making a joke.

  3. mary says:

oops – The head of Saudi Arabia’s judicial branch didn’t want to kill evil TV producers, he wanted to kill “immoral satellite TV channel owners”

  4. Hang on. Weren’t you the one who, some while ago, was freaking out about rats in the same neighborhood as restaurants?

  5. Oh, and you misquoted me in your update. No question mark.

  6. mary says:

Hang on. Weren’t you the one who, some while ago, was freaking out about rats in the same neighborhood as restaurants?

    Your point is…?

  7. My point is that you have similar issues with rodents.

  8. mary says:

Do you have issues with rats in and around restaurants?

I’m still not getting your point. What does this have to do with the fact that the State Department relies on the Saudi government to solve our foreign policy and economic problems?

  9. mary says:

..and I like Mickey Mouse. I also found “An American Tail” to be fairly watchable, even though my kids watched it hundreds of times. I still don’t get your point.

  10. I still don’t get your point.

Suppose it was Mickey Rat instead of Mickey Mouse?

I’m not sure why anyone would get bent out of shape by someone objecting to a rodent as a cultural icon? It’s just opinion, and it’s their culture. If they want to kill mice, who gives a damn?

  11. mary says:

..and if they want to kill US soldiers, Iraqi civilians and satellite TV owners?

Oh, scratch that. They have killed US soldiers and Iraqi civilians. Thousands of them. That’s why it’s a bad idea for us to rely on their friendship and their goodwill.

Why are you making excuses for this culture? Don’t you have better use for your time?

  13. mary says:

Oh, and American Tail had rats in it. I don’t mind rats as pets, but I prefer snakes &lizards.

  14. ..and if they want to kill US soldiers, Iraqi civilians and satellite TV owners?

What does a comment about the cleanliness of mice have to do with political extremism?

Why are you making excuses for this culture?

What? Excuses? Where? They don’t like mice. Acknowledging that is making excuses for them?

Okay, they’re fascists because they find mice unclean.

  15. Your post was not about TV satellite owners, it was about Munajid’s attitude toward mice. And you keep bringing up A-Lahidan when the post was about Munajid’s quote.

Are you confusing the two? Or do you think they’re all the same?

  16. mary says:

There was an interesting comment about my post on Solomonia from a commenter from the Gulf. ‘Arabian’ said:

the scholrs intentions are clean and clear, they dont want corruption in the society. but on the same time memritv, as usuall, turned from bieng serious and acadamic and usefull…to following gossips and paparazzi tactics.

shiekh louheaidan who spent his life serving islam ment that who ever seeks corruption should face death.

ok so what does this mean……everybody goes and kills every corrupt TV channel owner…ofcourse no….because this means “iftiat” or killing in the name of islam or shariee…..even if the shariee or laws procliam that he should be killed…the only entity that can carry punishments is the government only.

    So I asked arabian:

When Chief Justice A-Lahidan went on Saudi TV in 2005 and said “If someone knows that he is capable of entering Iraq in order to join the fight, and if his intention is to raise up the word of God, then he is free to do so,”, many Saudis did what he asked them to do. Does that mean that the subsequent flood of saudi suicide bombers into Iraq was officially sanctioned by the entire Saudi government?

    arabian replied:

    Ok its fair enogh.

but lets say what does this do to america, he said can go to iraq, not america. although from what I know he doesnt [say] this anymore.

When A-Lahidan told people to kill satellite TV owners, no one followed his instruction because the government didn’t back him up.

However, when A-Lahidan told young Saudis to go to Iraq and kill Iraqis and Americans, people followed his instructions because the government did back him up.

Which means that our ‘officials’ were totally lying when they said:

…American military and diplomatic officials who discussed the flow of fighters from Saudi Arabia were careful to draw a distinction between the Saudi government and the charities and individuals who they said encouraged young Saudi men to fight in Iraq.

PS. Arabian also noted that there are no priests in Islam. When the media calls former diplomats and jurists ‘clerics’, they’re totally misrepresenting them. In the KSA, religious leaders are powerful government officials.
