A plane landed in the Hudson a mile from my house!

Via the New York Times:

A US Airways jetliner with 148 passengers and 5 crew members plunged into the icy Hudson River on Thursday afternoon five minutes after taking off from LaGuardia Airport, and a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said everyone on board escaped safely.

According to Mayor Bloomberg at the press conference, the pilot did a great job landing the plane on the Hudson and of making sure that no one was still on the plane. He was the last one to get out. I got down there about an hour after the crash, and things seemed to be taken care of. And it was wicked cold!

According to witnesses, the plane did a belly flop, and the explosion of water was “like a volcano”.

The plane is still floating. Amazing that it’s in such good shape..

UPDATE: Suitably Flip links to more info about the heroic pilot, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger

This news is going to make me pay more attention to those “human factor” sections of Private Pilot instruction books. It really is important.
